Surrealistic Gothic DaDa

Johanna Braun’s temporary changes transform the Startgalerie into a cosy apartment. There’s a large iron canopy bed, a table with stools, two armchairs in front of a TV, even flowers and carpets. But the very well known paintings on the walls make it clear that this is an art exhibit. Mona Lisa in a ghost costume is one of the most eye-catching pieces amongst a series of transformed icons of art history. Goya’s naked Maya, Boticelli’s Venus, Manet’s Olympia or John Everettt Millais’ Ophelia – they have all been removed from their respective paintings. But that these works have lost none of their radiance - precisely because they gain an additional and new appeal by leaving the main figure out - is mainly due to the outstanding quality of the originals. The fact that such a young artist paints over these masterpieces so unashamedly - thus creating something new - follows the good tradition dating back to Dada, without which contemporary art would be inconceivable.
The wall, bountifully decorated with film posters, the self-built furniture covered by lettering or the flower cachepot are all essential for the overall impression of the show, but much less exciting than the very witty black-and-white video, reminding of early animated cartoons. That the show is neither one-sided nor gloomy despite the many references to Gothic subculture would only come across as a surprise if one forgets the fun of the matter that seems to be in the foreground.
