Griffin Art Prize 2015 A Residency and Exhibition Award for Emerging Artists Deadline for applications: August 9th Apply now at http://griffinartprize.com/uk Designed to have a meaningful impact on the career of one emerging artist, the Griffin Art Prize provides the time, space and materials from supporting fine art brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris to develop work for a one-person exhibition. It is open to emerging artists graduated since 2010 and the judges will be looking for excellence and innovation in painting and drawing. Twenty long listed artists for this year’s Prize will be announced in September and have their work featured on http://griffinartprize.com/uk. Following that announcement, the judges will select ten short-listed artists to exhibit in a group show in November 2015 at Griffin Gallery in West London, a high profile showcase opportunity visited by collectors, curators and other art world professionals. The overall winner will be awarded a six month working residency in the Studio Building, London W11 to develop a solo exhibition for Griffin Gallery, opening in September 2016. The four judges selecting the long list, shortlist and winner of the Griffin Art Prize 2015 are: Apollo columnist and freelance critic, Emma Crichton-Miller, Lindéngruppen owner and chairman, Jenny Lindén Urnes, Director of Camden Arts Centre, Jenni Lomax, artist and curator, Stuart Semple. Artists benefit from professional exposure as a consequence of the prize; 2012 winner Alzbeta Jaresova was included in the Catlin Guide to the 40 most promising new graduate UK artists and was shortlisted for the 2014 Jerwood Prize for Drawing. 2013 winners Luke George and Elizabeth Rose are currently undertaking a working residency in Ibiza. 2014 winner Chudamani Clowes is in the studio developing work for her solo show at Griffin Gallery from 27 August 2015. She is currently a columnist and features writer for Apollo Magazine but writes regularly also for the Financial Times, the How to Spend It Magazine, The Wall Street Journal Europe, and other magazines. After a first career as a television producer, making arts and science programmes for the BBC and Channel Four, she turned to journalism and writing. She has written many catalogue essays, including, most recently an essay for the catalogue of Ai Wei Wei at Blenheim Palace. In 2014 her monograph essay on potter Edmund de Waal was published by Phaidon and this year an essay on stained glass artist Tom Denny will be published as part of a monograph on the artist. Jenny Lindén Urnes is the owner and Chairman of Lindéngruppen, a family business based in Sweden, focusing on long-term development of industrial companies, including Winsor & Newton and Liquitex. Jenny is the Chairman of the Färgfabriken Foundation, a centre for contemporary art and architecture in Stockholm. With a passionate interest in art, she also chairs the jury for the Beckers Art Award. Established in 1987, this award has been given to several of Sweden’s most innovative and exciting young artists. Jenni Lomax has been the director of Camden Arts Centre, London, since 1990 where she has established an international programme of exhibitions, residencies, education projects and public events. She led the organisation through a major building refurbishment scheme which was completed in early 2004. She was awarded the Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007, and received an OBE for her services to the Visual Arts in 2009. Before Camden Arts Centre, Jenni developed and headed up the Community Education and Public Programmes at the Whitechapel Art Gallery throughout the 1980’s. Throughout her career she has been involved in an advisory capacity with many arts, education and charitable organisations and has been a member of selection and judging panels for numerous awards and exhibitions including The Turner Prize, Arts Foundation Award and the Jerwood Drawing Prize. She maintains a close relationship to Art education through her role as External Examiner and occasional Lecturer at a number of University Fine Art Courses. Stuart Semple is a British Artist born in 1980 who has held 15 major international solo exhibitions in the UK, USA, China and Italy. Semple has also featured in many group exhibitions and charity projects at institutions including ICA, Victoria Miro, Sotheby’s, The Fine Art Society, Museum of Art & Design (NY), Sao Paulo Biennial and Art Basel, Miami. He is best known for his paintings, which present an emotive and sociological perspective on mass culture. Against this backdrop he uses a unique visual language to discuss recurring themes of image making, technology, anxiety and spirituality. Stuart has written for the Guardian, Huffington Post, Art of England and presented for the BBC. In 2009, in a public art performance ‘Happy Cloud’, Semple released thousands of smiley-faced artificial clouds into the London skyline from Tate Modern, an action he repeated in subsequent years in Moscow, Dublin and Milan. 2012 saw Stuart become the first artist to release an entire body of digital work on iTunes. Stuart Semple regularly speaks publicly about his art, creativity, the Internet and mental health and has appeared at ICA, Prince’s Drawing School, Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), Jerwood Space and others. Applying artists must be eligible to stay in the UK until October 2016. All artworks selected for the shortlist exhibition must be available until February 2016.
