San Francisco Art Institute seeks Assistant Professors of New Genres and Painting
San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) seeks artists with active exhibition records for two full-time positions, one each in New Genres and Painting.
Candidates for these teaching positions must be prepared to instruct students at all levels—from beginning to advanced BFA and MFA—in required courses as well as electives. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach to a diverse student body and whose own interests, knowledge, and practice synthesize a wide range of interdisciplinary influences.
Qualifications
These Assistant Professor positions require an MFA degree and a minimum of three years' teaching experience at the college level, or equivalent professional experience. Applicants must demonstrate achievement and the potential to make significant contributions in their specific field of research and practice. Commitment to collaboration and an ability to work in an interdisciplinary arts environment are required.
The full-time teaching load at SFAI is six courses per year; full-time faculty are additionally expected to contribute service to the institution and participate in faculty governance as members of the SFAI Faculty Senate.
About the programs
New Genres at SFAI has strong roots in the history of conceptual art, in which artists' concepts, intentions, and questions are both the art medium and the work itself. Initially founded as a major in performance art and video, New Genres quickly expanded to also encompass site specificity, social practices, and other transdisciplinary media and approaches. Applicants to this position should be prepared to teach performance art, video, installation, and/or other interdisciplinary forms at all levels.
Painting at SFAI has been at the forefront of numerous historical movements, including Social Realism, Abstract Expressionism, Bay Area Figuration, the California Funk Movement, and the street art-inspired projects of the Mission School. This pluralistic history informs the contemporary moment, in which all possibilities are valued, from traditional approaches on canvas to interdisciplinary painting practices. Applicants to this position should be prepared to teach introductory drawing and painting courses, advanced topic-based electives, and MFA critique seminars.
